Fuji Classic Chrome

with 8 comments

The rain has been keeping us mostly indoors for the last few days, but between the much needed showers in California, I found some time to chase Suki around using Fuji’s new Classic Chrome setting on the X100T. Some of the results actually remind me of the last roll of Portra I ran through my M3:

Ai Weiwei At The Rock

A fascinating collection of art instillations by Ai Weiwei brought us to Alcatraz today. Had a blast photographing the incredible artwork, and the early morning light had me chasing shadows all over the island:

The iPhone 6 Camera

with 3 comments

After spending a couple years with Android smartphones, I jumped back over to Apple with the new iPhone 6. While I prefer the Android OS, I won’t really miss it because I’m still using it (lovin’ my Nexus tablet). Can’t imagine missing out on that sweet looking Android Lollipop update, so yeah, I’m in both camps :)

The iPhone 6 a beautifully made device, and Apple finally upped the screen size. What I was really after this time around, however, is that iSight camera system. As much as I loved my Moto X, the camera was just ridiculously bad. Not so with the iPhone. It’s got a great sensor and lens combo that’s more responsive, faster focusing, and works better in low light than any phone I’ve had to date. Apple really nailed it when it comes to image processing as well, so colors look great and there’s a surprising amount of dynamic range (HDR results look pretty natural). iOS8 allows much more manual control over exposure than ever before, and the new photos app has great built-in tools for tweaking the images even further after capture.

All images in this post were taken with the iPhone 6, and some were edited in iOS8’s built-in photos app:

So there you have it, my new favorite compact camera. :)

The Meadow Fire

with 5 comments

A few weeks back we took a quick drive out to Yosemite. The park was its typical beautiful self, only there was a huge wildfire raging that day. Huge clouds of smoke billowed from behind the Half Dome and could be seen from just about anywhere we happened to be throughout our one-day visit.

As the sun fell, the plumes of smoke lit up in a beautiful, purplish hue, and we pulled to the side of the road to catch a stunning sunset.

I definitely have to come back for a more leisurely visit next time.

Weekend Voyagers

with 5 comments

Processed with VSCOcam with a1 preset

The weekend was a whirlwind. One day in LA with my cell phone as my only camera and my picture taking almost exclusively limited to a concert venue. I feel like I might be getting a little old for super-fast trips like this (so. very. tired.), but hey, we’re still happy to go out of our way to see Jenny in concert.

Shooting With The Canon G1 X Mark II

with 3 comments

I’ve been using the Canon G1 X Mark II as my primary grab and go digital camera for the last few months. My initial impressions were already pretty favorable, and I’m happy to say that it’s grown on me even more now that I’ve been shooting with it for a while.

It probably won’t dethrone my all time favorite digital camera, but it’s got a well deserved place in the camera bag:

Remnants Of The Old Mission District

with 5 comments

L1000363

This post is a little bit of a throwback. Growing up in San Francisco, I was always fascinated by the old buildings in the Mission District, particularly the old theaters. I took these images in 2012. The city’s rapid gentrification made quick work of these beautiful but derelict structures, and most of what you see here is either gone or significantly altered today. The “New Mission” sign below? Yeah, that’ll stick around, after being refreshed and then squished right up against a massive luxury condo development.
