Fuji. Film.

with 15 comments

Do you shoot film? Then why didn’t you tell me this would be so addictive!!!?!?!?

Right now I’m trying to run a different roll through the M3 each time as I get a feel for the camera. These are scans from a roll of Fuji 160s. So far I think I’m liking Tri-X the most for shooting with the M3, but this color negative film is pretty nice stuff:

A Mistake Worth Repeating

with 12 comments

Yet another roll of 127 film that I ran through my 53-year-old Ansco Cadet. I’ve been trying to put together a small portfolio of images taken with the Ansco, but it hasn’t exactly been smooth sailing. I lost the last roll of film I shot with it before I could get the roll developed, and it’s pretty easy to see from the scans above that my latest roll had some issues.

Seems I was unknowingly overlapping exposures this time around. Oops! But even though I was bummed when I first saw the negatives, out of curiosity I decided to scan them anyway while preserving the overlapping frames. I must admit, I kind of like the results. Might be a mistake worth knowingly repeating :)

The image above shows the three complete scans that were done at the lab, and I added some crops below to show more detail:

Totally digging the multiple Suki frames here.

Metric

Metric at the Great American Music Hall. Need I say more? My x100 was actually taken from me during the show. They said it was “too professional looking.” So I whipped out the XPRO-1 to take some shots of Emily and crew, and somehow I got away with that. Hmph!

Metric rocks!

Jenny At Cafe Du Nord

with 3 comments

The incredibly talented Jenny Lewis played this weekend with the Watson Twins, Johnathan Rice, Farmer Dave, and Nik Freitas at the Swedish American Hall in Cafe du Nord here in San Francisco. It was Jenny at her best, and this show was probably one of my favorites ever, right up there with the concert she did at the House of Blues. Front row seats are awesome for taking a few photos and grabbing one of the set lists at the end of the show.

Just a word on the Fuji XPRO-1. This thing has some staggering low-light performance. Just give the AF something contrasty to lock on to, and the camera returns some amazing files! :)

The California Coast

with 11 comments

A few snaps from a trip up the California coast line. The morning always starts with an outing with the dog, this time at the beach. Really helps get Suki tired enough to relax in the car during the long drive.

The foggy coastal morning along with the shapes and textures on the beach seemed perfect for some black and white shooting. At this point, Lightroom 4 doesn’t support RAW files from the XPRO-1, so these images are all processed in-camera using either the red or green filtered black and white film simulation modes. Though I figured I’d probably switch over to color as the sun burned off the fog, I ended up staying in black and white for the rest of the trip:

Trips like this make me so glad I live by the coast =)

Rangefindin’

Leica M9 + 50mm f/2 Summicron | 1/250 sec, f/2.4, ISO 400

With their retro, rangefinder-like designs, it would seem inevitable that cameras like the X100 or XPRO-1 would cause many to think of Leica’s M series. While I love the Fuji cams, shooting an M is a very, very different experience. Not everyone responds to rangefinder cameras the same way, and shooting with one is not everyone’s cup of tea, but shooting with the M9? Love it.

This little guy isn’t Suki. Just another beautiful Shiba we ran into the park. =)

Good night, and happy shooting this week!

Some Weekend Bokeh

with 11 comments

Nikon D800 + Zeiss Planar T* 85mm f/1.4 ZF .2 | 1/1600th sec f/1.4 ISO100 (24 image stitch)

Just a couple Bokeh Panoramas I was working on over the weekend. I can see how generating these kinds of images can get super addictive! The beautiful TLR the wife is holding above is yet another camera I found by digging through my parents’ basement. It’s absolutely beautiful, and I can’t wait to post my results from it.

Nikon D800 + Nikkor 200mm f/2 VR II | 1/500th sec f/2 ISO400 (too-many-image stitch)

Next, I’m working on a ridiculous-as-possible bokeh pano of Suki. Still a work in progress…
