This weekend, a new mall will be opening in Japantown, San Francisco. It’s called “New People” and located at 1746 Post street. The building will feature artwork, films, and fashion straight from Japanese pop culture, and will also house a few places to eat. I encountered the three story glass-faced building during a stroll through Japantown this evening. The grand opening event for New People will take place tomorrow, and I’m pretty excited about this new complex. Since coming back from Tokyo, I’ve been feeling like Japantown SF could use a little something more to make me feel like I’m in, well, Japan! Perhaps this infusion of pop culture through this new mall will be just what this area needed. The pictures above show that there’s still plenty of work to do to get things ready for the grand opening, which from the time of this writing, will happen in only a matter of hours. Looking through the first floor windows, I saw workers scrambling to set up foodservice equipment, many of which hadn’t even been unboxed yet. Hope they finish on time!
After I grabbed a couple shots of the new building, walked through Peace Plaza on my way back to the car, and noticed that there was an outdoor screening of “Kamikaze Girls” taking place, a Japanese film that features quirky fashion straight out of Harajuku. I stood for a while as the sun dipped below the horizon, enjoyed the warm weather, and got a few good laughs from the movie. I snapped a few shots of the event, and called it an evening.
