Bridget and Jasmine hosted a really interesting and fun event at the Libatique’s house this weekend. A couple months back Jasmine began handing out invitations to what would be her first “Open Mic Night” to as many friends as possible. A few of her bravest buddies signed up to perform  both music and poetry on a makeshift stage set up in her huge backyard. Performances began Saturday evening following a huge dinner prepared lovingly by her parents. Tons of friends (and friends of friends) showed up and filled up carefully arranged chairs surrounding the stage area. I wish lighting conditions could have allowed me to capture the audience, but unfortunately the only light available that night came from a few 60 watt incandescent bulbs, all clamped to a quickly constructed pipe frame on the stage to light the performers.

Jasmine was the MC and host for the event. She also performed, of course!

Dav braved the crowd next with his own performance, followed by a song he sang with Desiree:

Jared contributed as well. Third on the sign-up sheet, he performed three songs that he wrote himself:

Open mic was, well, open. So we were able to enjoy other types of performances too:

We enjoyed a couple poetry readings, courtesy of Sandra (above) and Bridget with Jasmine on the bongos (below):

Next, Edwina and Ezekiel did us proud with a couple songs…

I felt a little left out actually! But I still had a blast watching my friends singing their hearts out and having a great time. Besides, someone’s gotta take the pictures, and I’m definitely more at home behind a camera than behind a microphone anyway.  I shot these images mainly through my two fast prime lenses (50mm 1.4 and AFS 35mm 1.8 Nikkors), and after the night was over I decided I need(want?) one more: an 85mm 1.8 Nikkor.  In due time!

On with the show! We had a family from Sunnyvale join in on the fun. Below is Fabian and Josh (another Josh!), and they did an awesome piece on their Ukuleles. It was seriously good….rhythmic and full of island flavor, I could swear I was at a Luau if I closed my eyes and pretended it was about 40 degrees warmer outside.

I totally want to learn how to play Ukulele now.

Desiree and Jasmine got together towards the end to sing a song in half Spanish (Jasmine) and half Portuguese (Desiree)

Singing in Portuguese and Spanish!

Singing in Portuguese and Spanish!

Sounded difficult! But they totally pulled it off =)

The night ended with coffee and dessert, and hanging out in the backyard under the heat lamp, singing songs we were to afraid to perform earlier, in front of much smaller audiences. I took well over 200 images, which include other performances not shown here, but it just would’ve taken too long to post them all. I think I’ll put more up later. Goodnight!

  1. Thanks Jonathan, We should print this out as it gives the blow by blow description of what happened. I’m sure Josh in Patterson would appreciate it as he could not make it to this event.

  2. Just goes to show what good friends, good music and good food can do! Thanks for documenting the first Open Mike event at the “Libatique Grove.” Many that were invited could not make it and wanted to perform so we will have to do this again soon. Bridget added an air of professionalism to the proceedings and her piano accompaniment of people after the event who were timid seemed to make them feel they could have done it before the audience too. We may have a few more budding performers. As Solomon said, there’s “a time for everything…a time to sing.” Reminds me of Joshua’s surprise rendition of “New York, NewYork” at his going away party. You never know who is just waiting for a chance to sing out!
