A fascinating collection of art instillations by Ai Weiwei brought us to Alcatraz today. Had a blast photographing the incredible artwork, and the early morning light had me chasing shadows all over the island:

A Coastal Road Trip

with 16 comments

Road trips are the best. We just got back from our latest long drive, and this time we even brought Suki along. So. Much. Fun.

Though I brought the pack film shooter and the M3 along for the trip, I did a bulk of my vacation photography in digital this time around. Here, in reverse chronological order, is a series of photos I took during the course of my trip with the Fuji X100s. All color photos are out of camera JPEGs using the camera’s “standard” picture control setting. Black and whites are also processed by the camera using the its red filter mode.

The wife took the image above of me trying to do a Photosphere with my camera phone.

The beaches along the Oregon coast are breath taking. Early morning light falling on massive rock formations on the sand made for some interesting black and white photos. I felt like I was on a different planet at times:

We made sure Suki had her fair share of hikes and meet ups:

Well, those are my digital highlights. A couple rolls of 35mm are at the lab from the trip, so we’ll see how those turn out =)

Back to the hospital today to visit little Zara. I’m sure there are some beautiful eyes behind those peacefully shut eyelids, but I have yet to see them. Maybe tomorrow =)

Another Day, Another Miracle

with 4 comments

I was filled with joy today as I met my great-niece for the very first time. Zara was born this morning at 7:32am, within the same hour of the day as her brother incidentally. She was nice enough to wave hello =)

Dolled Up

Untitled_Panorama2-Edit-2

The wife and I recently met up again with Desirae, a good friend and blogger who specializes in vintage fashion. We spent some time strolling through Golden Gate Park with Suki in tow, chatting it up and shooting some photos.

Since this was a casual shoot, I decided to experiment a little more than usual. I shot most of these as either single frames or stitched bokeh panoramas using one of my favorite lenses, the Nikon 135mm f/2 DC. A single speedlight and a small reflector kept things light and portable while serving as an additional lighting option as the sun kept ducking behind scattered clouds.

The other digital in the bag was Fuji’s new X100s. With its built-in neutral density filter and ability to sync with flash at ridiculously high shutter speeds, the camera works wonders with small flash in a bright environment. And those files…goodness. Single SB-910, gelled warm and zoomed to 200mm, firing into a small reflector behind me for these two. Taken at f/2, 1/1000:
